In a thrilling edition of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday afternoon, Jan Tratnik took the win for Team Visma | Lease a Bike. For Groupama - FDJ's Stefan Küng, a tinge of disappointment came over him at the finish line.
"There was an echelon after 60km or something like that and unfortunately we missed the split," the Swiss star recaps in his post-race interview with Eurosport. "From then on we were always one step behind. I was feeling quite good but the race was blocked because a lot of teams were represented in the front."
Despite the race-winning move seemingly having been made though, those that remained in the peloton never gave up and just over 10km to go, managed to bring the race back together and catch the breakaway, giving the likes of Kung a second chance. "Yeah, then it started with attacking left and right. It was difficult being on my own," he reflects.
"On the climbs and on the cobbles I was feeling good but we have to race more, we have to be more in it. We will do the debrief and try to be better in the other races," he concludes.
