UAE Team Emirates'
Juan Ayuso has powered to an incredible individual time-trial victory on the opening stage of
Tirreno-Adriatico 2024, edging
Filippo Ganna by just one second, with
Ethan Vernon completing the podium.
Team Visma | Lease a Bike always catch they eye when they race but with their new, specially designed time-trial helmets they were showing off for the first time here, there was some extra attention being paid to the riders in yellow-and-black. If you've not seen it yet, check it out
here!
Among some of the first men to go was Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader, Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane clocking a solid if unspectacular time of 11:46 for his efforts.
Whilst that was quicker than many of his GC rivals, such as Max Poole (11:50), Ben O'Connor (11:54) and Tom Pidcock (11:57), Vingegaard's time was blown out of the water by UAE Team Emirates leader, Juan Ayuso (11:24). The closest men to Ayuso were actually Jonathan Milan and Josef Cerny.
Pre-stage, one of the men expected to challenge for victory was INEOS Grenadiers' Magnus Sheffield although sadly for the American he got off to a nightmare start, sliding out on one of the opening corners.
Filippo Ganna will have had big hopes of taking victory. At the first check however, the Italian champion was 2 seconds slower than Ayuso. At the finish line, it was a little closer but Ganna was still slower by just a single second.
