BORA - hansgrohe came to the
Tour Down Under with big ambitions, having Max Schachmann and Jai Hindley as GC contenders. In the sprints
Jordi Meeus promised good results after a second place at the Schwalbe Classic, but has abandoned following the opening bunch sprint.
Meeus was one of the several victims of the crash that happened already inside the final kilometer. It was a very tense finale and Meeus was at the wrong place at the wrong time, hitting the deck. There were no fractures identified, however the Belgian fast man suffered a concussion and will not start stage 2 tomorrow.
"After the strong performance by Jordi in the criterium, where he was very convincing with a second place, we wanted to support him 100 per cent today," team DS Cristian Pömer said in a press release. "I must say that went very, very well throughout the day."
Unfortunately, he went down in the middle of the race and had to fight his way back after a wheel change. He managed that quite well. Unfortunately, he then crashed again quite heavily in the finale, and we hope that despite his injuries, he will be able to stay in the race. But the doctor will have the last word on this. Tomorrow is another sprint stage, but we'll just have to see what the medical diagnoses look like and then will accordingly make our plans," he concluded.
