Jonas Vingegaard has begun training for the 2027 season, and has recently been seen on Danish roads. The 2027 season will be key in his career, and the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider is already hard at work ahead of it.
In a video that has been shared on social media, Vingegaard has been spotted training in Aarhus, Denmark. The Danish rider ended his season at the Tour de France in mid-July due to a collarbone fracture, and opted not to resume racing in 2026.
His 2026 season was highly successful while it lasted, featuring overall wins at Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and the Giro d'Italia for the first time. The Visma rider was en route for a podium placing at the Tour de France.
Vingegaard's comeback to racing was rumoured throughout the fall, taking into consideration Tadej Pogacar's absence from the World and European Championships; and Il Lombardia. But that didn't come to be.
Whilst most riders are now in the middle of their off-season, Vingegaard has not raced for over three months, and has effectively begun serious preparations for the next season earlier. At this point of the year, it is normal for riders to take up training blocks with longer riders and less intensity.

Is Vingegaard's position in the peloton at risk?

The Dane's chances of fighting for the yellow jersey at the 2027 Tour de France are potentially lesser than previous years, with a time trial-heavy route favouring the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas instead.
At this week's CyclingUpToDate Podcast, Rúben Silva and Gavin Quinn agreed on the Dane having a route that is far suited to his abilities, and that ASO may no longer see him as Tadej Pogacar's main rival:
"I think Visma and Vingegaard will have to think kind of long and hard what they want to get out of this Tour," Quinn had said. "They've done the Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double (back in 2023, ed.). The likelihood is that won't happen again".

Will Vingegaard solo lead the Tour de France again at Visma?

Another question to be posed is Vingegaard's position within the team. With the sprint-friendly Grand Depart and overall route next year, the team could opt to select British sprinter Matthew Brennan into its lineup.
The likelihood of a Giro-Tour double once again in 2027 has not been written off for the Dutch team, as Richard Plugge spoke about the lack of conclusions from this year's test.
"He was really in good shape. Obviously, he had a big, big crash unfortunately, so he could not show ultimately how it worked out in the last week. That was obviously the big challenge and the big question going forward."
"To do a proper analysis, it's more or less difficult because we missed, let's say, from stage 15 onwards, we missed some data."
