Jonas Vingegaard returns to cycling just over a week after crashing and breaking his collarbone at the Tour de France. However, the Visma Lease a Bike rider won't be in lycra and cleats, but rather as part of the starting ceremony of a stage at Tour of Denmark.
The race's second stage, on July 30th, starts in his hometown of Glyngøre and the race has announced that the day's starting ceremony will feature a special guest in the name of Vingegaard.
The Visma leader's Tour de France came crashing down on stage 15 earlier this month as he crashed on a corner and abandoned. His team confirmed he underwent successful surgery and that his future plans will be reassessed as he recovers from his injuries.
The crash came ahead of the second week's final climb, and Visma upping the tempo in an attempt to challenge Tadej Pogacar's grip on the yellow jersey. Sitting second place at the time, it's the first time in six editions that he failed to finish La Grand Boucle.
Event Manager Klaus Falk Paarup expressed the race's honour of welcoming the Dane home as a triple-crown grand tour winner after his Giro d'Italia triumph in May.

Vingegaard to appear at Tour of Denmark

"Jonas Vingegaard is not just one of the world's best cyclists - he is also Glyngøre's great hero. The fact that he takes the stage in his hometown and throws stardust over our cycling race is one of the moments we always look forward to at PostNord Danmark Rundt.
"And it is also our first opportunity to congratulate him on his victory in the Giro d'Italia earlier this year and his fantastic Grand Tour triple," he said.
A statement read: "The event is expected to start around 11:15, with announcers Carsten Ritter and Peter Piil welcoming Jonas on stage in Glyngøre to explain what it means to him that the race is starting from his town.
"As a natural part of Jonas Vingegaard's presence, he will be celebrated for his great performance during this year's Giro d'Italia, where he became only the eighth person in history – and the first Dane – to win all three Grand Tours.
"We look forward to welcoming Jonas Vingegaard to PostNord Danmark Rundt on his home turf before the start of stage 2 of PostNord Danmark Rundt. We hope that many people will want to come to Glyngøre, listen to Jonas and pay tribute to him for his impressive Grand Tour Triple and wish him a good recovery ahead of the autumn race, after his unfortunate crash in the Tour de France."
