Jesús David Peña has taken the win on the 4th stage of the 2023
Tour of Slovenia after his teammate
Filippo Zana overshot a corner on the final descent whilst leading solo.
The queen stage, very clearly and quite a difficult one. The race has been here quite a lot in the past, this year it'll be ridden twice the ascent to Kolovrat. It's 10.1 kilometers long at 8.9% and the riders will have to go up it twice before reaching the finish in Kobarid.
With all breakaway riders caught before the second ascent of the Kolovrat, the peloton took on the final climb of the day together.
The pace was fierce at the front of the bunch as plenty of riders were trying their luck with attacking moves.
Eventually, a group went clear that contained the Italian national champion and recent Giro d'Italia stage winner, Filippo Zana.
The
Team Jayco AlUla rider began to ride clear alongside Paul Double of Human Powered Health. But when Zana made his move, Double was unable to follow.
As Zana reached the top of the final climb, he led his teammate Jesús David Peña by around 10 seconds with Double now in a group with Lorenzo Fortunato, Diego Ulissi and Matteo Badilatti at over 20 seconds down.
Nightmare then struck for Zana as the Italian slid out on the descent, having to pull both himself and his bike up from the grass below, with his teammate now in the lead.
Pena held on for the win with Zana recovering to take 2nd at the line.
