UAE Team Emirates will be down a rider for the remainder of the 2024 Volta a Catalunya as one of Tadej Pogacar's key lieutenants, Jay Vine has abandoned.
Vine was notable by his absence in the finale of the stage, with Pogacar pretty much all alone from a UAE Team Emirates perspective. Pre-stage 2 the Slovenian lighter shone a little light on the situation, alluding to the fact that Vine had been suffering from stomach issues.
Now, confirmation has come that Vine will not start stage 2. “Unfortunately Jay Vine fell ill with stomach problems after stage 1 of Volta a Catalunya," reads an official announcement from the UAE Team Emirates social media page. "Though his symptoms improved overnight he was not in condition to take the start today. He will now go home to rest and recover as a precautionary measure.”
