As the Classics season gets underway, Jasper Stuyven is set to lead Lidl-Trek at Opening Weekend. Having won both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne in the past, Stuyven will be hoping for another strong set of results at both races.
The Belgian rider’s sports director at Lidl-Trek and former winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège Dirk De Wolf has said in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad ahead of the weekend that “he has already won both races from the Opening Weekend. Moreover, he has a strong team this year. Especially now that Tim Declercq rides for Lidl-Trek”.
Looking ahead to the rest of Stuyven’s Classics season, De Wolf said “Jasper may have to work a lot for Mads Pedersen this year. I place the Dane just below the quartet Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogačar. That is why Jasper must focus on races just below the greatest classics and monuments”.
Therefore, Stuyven will have to take his chance in these two upcoming races in order to secure more opportunities for the remainder of the season. With his current Flemish Classics schedule after Opening Weekend including races such as the Classic Brugge-De Panne, E3 Saxo Classic, Gent-Wevelgem and Dwars door Vlaanderen, there should be more races where he will have a leadership role ahead of the Ronde van Vlaanderen.
