"I’ve stayed off the beers since the Giro" - Geraint Thomas 'can't wait to get stuck in' on Tour de France return

The 2018 Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas has been confirmed for a return to the Grand Boucle for the first time since finishing 3rd at the 2022 edition behind Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar.

In his most recent outing, Thomas claimed a second successive Giro d'Italia podium, finishing 3rd behind Pogacar and Daniel Martinez in Rome and taking home a fifth career Grand Tour podium finish for the 38-year-old Welshman. As part of a very strong leadership group within the INEOS Grenadiers team, including Carlos Rodriguez, Tom Pidcock and fellow Grand Tour winner Egan Bernal, Thomas' will enter the Tour de France with more of a super domestique role for Rodriguez, a role in which he has excelled in the past for Chris Froome.

"It’s official then, back to the Tour," reacts Thomas to the confirmation of the INEOS Grenadiers lineup for the Tour de France, that alongside the aforementioned names, also includes Ben Turner, Jonathan Castroviejo, Laurens De Plus and Michal Kwiatkowski. "I’ve stayed off the beers since the Giro and been feeling alright. Can’t wait to get stuck in again with the boys. Doesn’t get any bigger than the Tour."

“The competition is tougher than ever, but nothing is a given in Grand Tour cycling. We have been racing this season as the hunters not the hunted and that brings its own advantages. The Giro last month was a perfect example of how we love to race as a team - putting the pressure on, fighting for every opportunity, and taking chances, and it is how we plan to race in France over the coming weeks," assessed INEOS Grenadiers performance director Scott Drawer to the team's official website previously. “After a strong and consistent season, Carlos will be leading the INEOS Grenadiers’ charge across France. Carlos has continued to impress us with his racing as well as his professionalism and attitude on and off the bike. Right beside him will be the strength and Tour experience of Egan, with Tom and Geraint providing support but also looking to race aggressively, disrupt and take the race to our competition."
