Caleb Ewan was not seen as a contender for the World Championships as it features over 4000 meters of climbing, however was still very disappointed to learn some weeks ago that he was not selected to ride the race.
In an interview with RTBF he said that "it's extremely disappointing. I will probably never get another chance to participate in a World Cup in my own country. It will hurt me to see the race on television”. The team opted with Michael Matthews' leadership, who will be ambitioning the gold medal in the hilly Wollongong course.
The likes of Ben O'Connor, Jai Hindley and Nick Schultz are also expected to ride the men's Elite Road Race, as the team seeks success on home roads. Ewan was not in the national team's vision for the race, but has been bringing in UCI points to try and pull out Lotto Soudal off the relegation zone.
“I have achieved very important points for my team in the fight to remain in the WorldTeams. It's about performing as well as possible and scoring points in the coming weeks. It can work, but it's not done yet," he concluded.
