“ It wasn't a smart move rather a bit stupid”: Remco Evenepoel recalls his attack at 10 km to the end in stage 5 of Vuelta a San Juan

Remco Evenepoel was the first of the favorites to make a move in Alto de Colorado during stage 5 of Vuelta a San Juan. The Belgian of Soudal-Quick-Step made an attack at around 10 kilometers to the mountain finish that wasn't followed by anyone and was caught by the work of INEOS-Grenadiers riders.

“That attack was rather to break open the race. I hoped that some good men would jump along, but nobody felt like it. In hindsight, I have to be honest with myself. It wasn't a smart move. Rather a bit stupid”, commented the World Champion about his attack.

Still, the main goal of Remco Evenepoel in Vuelta a San Juan is to gain kilometers on competition to get in shape for his bigger objectives during the season. The Belgian finished in the 7th place of the stage, considering a test for the rest of the season showing no worries. In general classification Remco also places on the 7th spot and most likely end there since the stages to go (2 more) are mostly flat and ideal for sprinters.

"I am here to play and build up. After this, I will prepare for the UAE Tour through intensive training at home in Calpe,", revealed the World Champion to Het Laatste Nieuws.
