INEOS have lost yet another rider in the transfer market as American Magnus Sheffield has signed a four-year deal with Uno-X Mobility. The versatile 24-year-old leaves after five seasons with the team, breaking through as an all-rounder with experience in three Grand Tours.
A blow to the British team, Sheffield is their seventh confirmed exit ahead of the 2027 season as only junior world champion Benjamin Noval has been officially announced as an arrival for the new season. However, the US-born's destination is equally intriguing.
Sheffield's arrival at Uno-X raised questions considering their transfer policy of only contracting Scandinavian riders, with the entirety of the team comprised of Danish and Norwegian riders.
Announcing the transfer, Uno-X quickly shut down suggestions that they had broken that transfer policy by confirming that Sheffield's mother is Norwegian, he speaks the language, has a Norwegian passport and strong ties to the Nordic country. In the announcement, he was referred to as Magnus Bratli Sheffield.

Sheffield on his Norwegian roots

“My mum grew up in Gjøvik, and most of our family now lives around Oslo. She moved to the US to study when she was 20, and that’s where she met my dad. We always spoke Norwegian at home. It was almost our secret family language growing up in the US," Sheffield said in the announcement.
“Even though we grew up in the US, it was really important to my parents to keep the Norwegian traditions. We travelled back often to visit family. When I was a kid, coming to Norway always felt like a little adventure. In some ways, it still does.”
Finishing in third place in the 2019 World Championships junior road race, Sheffield was on the radar of the growing Uno-X team, who have now progressed and are establishing themselves as a WorldTour fixture.
“After I won bronze at the junior World Championships, someone asked me in the press conference if it could count as a medal for Norway as well. I said: ‘This is a medal for both Norway and the US'. I spoke with Uno-X when I was a junior, and I’ve always felt that it was never really a question of if I would ride for the team, but when.”
“Joining Uno-X Mobility feels like closing the circle on the journey my mum started when she moved to the US at 20. Uno-X has always been a team I was interested in, even before I became a professional.”

Hushovd praises new signing

The former Brabantse Pijl and Paris-Nice stage winner's arrival signals a big splash in the transfer market for the team, with general manager Thor Hushovd praised his versatility.
“Magnus is a rider with enormous potential, and I don’t think we have seen the full extent of it yet. He has already finished fourth in Paris-Nice and sixth in Flanders. That tells you a lot about the range he has.
“This is one of the big signings for us, and one we are very proud of. We believe we can give him the environment to take another step and develop into one of the leading riders in the sport.”
