Fernando Gaviria arrives at the Giro d'Italia 2024 with the intention of taking the occasional sprint win. The Movistar Team sprinter will be the spearhead of his team in the flat stages and the one who could fulfill the Spanish team's stage victory aspirations.
In a pre-race press conference with his teammates and compatriots Nairo Quintana and Einer Rubio, the Colombian made clear the ambitions with which the team arrives at the Corsa Rosa:
"I think we come with a pretty strong team for the sprint. We've worked together I think the last month, month and a half. We've prepared well, we've created a good group and we're waiting for the Giro to start. We have good legs and try to do our best. I think we have a lot of options but we also know that there are a lot of rivals so it's to analyze every day and go day by day."
However, he is aware of the fierce fight that will be the sprints, in a race with several options for the sprinters, where riders like Tim Merlier, Jonathan Milan or Kaden Groves, among others, will be present:
"Yes, we look at the rivals because there are many are rivals that I already know, they are rivals who are having very good season but in the end we are happy with the preparation. The preparation we did very focused on this goal and I think the team has supported us well in that area, because the four riders that we are to do the sprints have been together for a month."
"We know the whims of each one, so it gives a little more peace of mind because we have a good team that we can take advantage of and wait for the flat stages to start and arrive to see what strengths we have or what weaknesses the other rivals show us."
