“I suffered a puncture and a crash” - Guillermo Thomas Silva’s epic overall victory in Arctic Race of Norway as he defends lead

Thomas Silva wrapped up a perfect week at the Arctic Race of Norway by sealing overall victory. The Uruguayan from XDS Astana Team defended his lead on the final stage to Narvik, where he finished third, and celebrated one of the biggest wins of his career.
“I’m very happy with this victory, very happy,” summed up Silva after the race. The Uruguayan especially praised his team’s work on a complicated day, where he had to protect a 10-second cushion over Lennert Van Eetvelt.
“The plan with the team was to control the race. It was a tricky, very fast stage, but the guys worked really well and, in the finale, I controlled the climb and my pace, staying alert to the GC rivals,” explained Silva. The leader managed his effort on the final ascent to Narvikfjellet and kept a close eye on his main opponents.
A day that started the wrong way
The aim wasn’t only to defend the lead. Silva also tried to cap his performance with another stage win, after taking the third day. “I tried to win the stage, but it wasn’t possible,” admitted the Uruguayan, who ultimately settled for third, three seconds behind winner Cedrik Bakke Christophersen.
The overall triumph carries extra weight given the hurdles Silva overcame on the final day of racing in the Arctic Circle. The leader punctured and also crashed in the early kilometres, complicating a day that ended in the best possible way.
“Satisfied, very happy. It was a very hard day, I had a puncture and a crash at the start — the day began a bit the wrong way,” said the XDS Astana rider. The team reacted quickly and brought him back to where he needed to be to face the finale with confidence.

Silva wants to return to Norway next year
“After that, my teammates did an enormous job and we hit the last climb with chances,” stressed Silva, highlighting their role on a day when defending the lead meant shutting down every rival move.
In the end, the Uruguayan crested with the best, finished third, and secured the overall ahead of Van Eetvelt and Alessandro Pinarello. “Happy to win the GC,” he concluded.
The victory also leaves the Uruguayan eager to return to a race he particularly enjoyed riding. “It’s a beautiful race. I hope to come back next year,” said Silva after conquering the Arctic Race.

Jonas can race what he wants to race, or not. his choice. but I draw the line at the sympathy card of “oh I want to be around my kids”. I want to be around my kids too, but I don’t make millions a year either. beyond that, who has an employer that is ok with someone not doing his job so he can spend time at home? that is insane. must be nice. - Happy for you then, just can’t understand why a family man would not admire Jonas a bit more. I’d like to have seen Tadej juggling it all around and telling Urska to stay at home for the kids. - Clearly, and had there been no Tadej or had he been born another time, he’d be the one with most Tdf wins ever. Someone (abstractengineer?) once spoke of the impossibility of having two riders of Tadej’s level at the same time but aside potentially Seixas, we actually have been witnessing two of the best ever GT riders competing at the same time.Mistermaumau16-08-2026
- Correct for this type of race, HOWEVER, some details. He was not alone, he was accompanied by a police motorcycle who unfortunately couldn’t quite keep up or stay in front (unfortunate side effect of steep curvy downhills). Also, it seems organisers were relying on police to man main crossings which they did but didn’t consider the others enough. The driver encountered and engaged with only “spectators”, there was no marshal, criminal lack of judgment, luckily for them not legally criminal.Mistermaumau16-08-2026
- In pro racing there is money, it just has to be distributed right. In amateur cycling money is a joke and never coming back, clubs and organisers have to get “friends” to sponsor them and basically go around beggI g, hoping someone will not find it in them to say no to what is basically a giveaway. That doesn’t mean things can’t be better. A lot of courses (almost always circuits now) are chosen out of lazyness and convenience (e.g. having everything close at hand in a village) when basically for the race itself you don’t need any of that and for the 10% of inhabitants interested in watching (who never outweigh the 30% annoyed by it) you really don’t need to take extra risks when very often there are perfectly suitable loops to ve made with long uninterrupted stretches without side tracks, not disturbing traffic, a few km outside. “Tradition” is also an offender, “we’ve always done it here” “there’s never been an incident before” (well, if you really were interested, yes, maybe not BUT when you collate everyone’s knowledge of all the close calls that didn’t constitute incidents, any person with a well functioning brain would tell you that incident happening is only a matter of time. Of course then the discourse changes, “we couldn’t foresee that combination of circumstances” yes, because you preferred not to!Mistermaumau16-08-2026
- The top cyclists in the world race the Tour, he was firmly second before his crash, just as he's been in other years unless he was winning it as he did in 2022 and 2023. He's clearly number two in the world. He is getting older though and he will lose his capability a little more and more as time progresses over the next few years, some would say he already has. But, as of today he is clearly number two in the world. No one else is even close.awp16-08-2026
