Ahead of his first race of the season at O Gran Camiño, where he will be riding in support of last year’s winner and reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard,
Wilco Kelderman has been reflecting on his career, as he continues to transition from a GC leader to super-domestique for Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
In an interview with In de Leiderstrui, the 32-year-old looked back on the most successful part of his career, as he said that “I rode for myself for years and I think I got the most out of it. In this team it is just fun to achieve these goals together”.
Though his goals have shifted from when he was a GC leader at Team Sunweb and BORA - hansgrohe, Kelderman still has aims in the sport, as he went on to say that “it is great fun if you can all help Jonas to the Tour victory. It’s not that I don’t have ambitions, but there aren’t many races in a year that I can really go for myself”.
After O Gran Camiño this week, Kelderman’s schedule currently includes the race to the sun, as he is set to ride Paris-Nice in March before a series of Ardennes Classics at Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
The Giro d’Italia will be Kelderman’s main objective of the season though, as Team Visma | Lease a Bike look to target stage victories. The Dutchman will be aiming to take his first Grand Tour stage victory, as he said in his interview that “it is a nice challenge. A win is something I'm still chasing, so that's a good goal”.
