Remco Evenepoel showed great form today at the
Volta a Catalunya's opening summit finish, however that didn't materialize into a stage win. He's lost time in bonus seconds to both Primoz Roglic and Giulio Ciccone after an aggressive display.
“The feeling was good. Bahrain Victorious rode a really tight pace on the final climb, but I still felt very good then”, Evenepoel told media at the finale of the stage. “Even when we went even higher I still felt very good. I only started my sprint too early and because of this the legs were completely sour in the last fifty meters. I had no acceleration in my legs then. In the end, the best riders will emerge.”
Evenepoel had Ilan van Wilder do some good work in the final kilometers, and in the final 2 kilometers he launched his own move. However the World Champion was perhaps too kind, putting his nose to the wind and never again leaving until the final 50 meters. Two riders - race leader Primoz Roglic and stage winner Giulio Ciccone - kept up with the Belgian's accelerations, and they went through him in the uphill finish to Vallter 2000.
“I am very happy with the fact that I was able to accelerate seriously two more times in the last kilometers. I was never able to do that before," Evenepoel concludes. "They are only good signals towards the Giro. I don't know who was the strongest today. I took care of most of the work, but tomorrow is a new day. Then we go for it again.” 6 seconds are what separates him from race leader Roglic after two stages, and Giulio Ciccone is currently tied in time.
