For the sixth time in his career,
Dylan Groenewegen became a
Tour de France stage winner on stage 6 of the 2024 edition, taking the win ahead of
Jasper Philipsen in a thrilling finale in Dijon.
"I'm really happy, this is such a good feeling. I said beforehand that it would be nice to win and have a photo in the red-white-blue, but I couldn't celebrate at the finish line. That's a shame," laughed the
Team Jayco AlUla sprinter in his post-stage interview, referencing the close nature of the finish. "I'm really relieved, because yesterday I was still very disappointed. The team did a good job and I couldn't finish it off. Today it went well again and we stayed calm."
The 31-year-old Dutchman has had a little bad luck so far in the opening two sprints. After stage 3, Groenewegen admitted his frustrations having been forced to settle for 5th, despite feeling like the quickest sprinter of the bunch. Caught behind the chaos of the finale on stage 5, crossing the line in 12th, this time Groenewegen makes the final sprint work.
The stage 6 sprint was an incredibly close finale between Groenewegen and Philipsen
“I love these sprints, next to each other. Winning just at the finish is also great," concludes a delighted Groenewegen's reflection. "The fact that I can win in the first week means a lot, especially after those missed opportunities and also against such a strong sprint field.”
