Filippo Ganna was the main favourite for the opening time-trial at
Tirreno-Adriatico. However, not even the most positive of predictions would've had the Italian time-trialist winning with a 28-second gap over his closes competitor.
“It's good for morale. With an eye on the classics, this gives extra motivation," Ganna said after the finish. He beat Lennard Kämna as well as his own teammate Magnus Sheffield. "I think he drove great. He is also in good shape. We have one of the best teams here, with whom we can show something beautiful.”
“I just wanted to ride as fast as possible. Two days ago I didn't know how I would perform in this time trial, but I gave everything for myself, for the people and the Italian public," he described. His first win of the season, it compensates for the third spot at the Volta ao Algarve time-trial. He benefited from the lack of rain towards the end of the afternoon to put in a blistering time.
“We put in a great performance today. I am very happy for myself and for the team. We give a nice follow-up to Tom's (Pidcock, ed.) victory in the Strade Bianche. It's good for morale in the Tirreno. We will see what the weather is like tomorrow and enjoy the race," he concluded. He may be thinking of a GC tilt after such a strong start to the race.
