The cyclocross world champion Fem van Empel will not be seen in races during the upcoming period. A combination of factors sucked out the Visma | Lease a Bike rider's joy of cycling and therefore she'll now take a break from cycling altogether.
"The last few years I have been on an incredible journey - with three world and European titles at the highest level in cyclocross. This has required a lot of dedication and daily effort," Van Empel herself said on social media.
"I am currently facing a number of challenges. After consultation with the team, we have decided that a break from racing is the best move for my mental health and well-being. I will focus on my recovery with the aim of coming back stronger," the rider stated.
Many colleagues and fans reacted with respect under Van Empel's message. Among others, Nienke Veenhoven, Roxanne Knetemann and Noemi Ruëgg posted a reaction. Demi Vollering also gave her compatriot a pat on the back. "Very strong to take a step back, that alone will make you stronger! Because those are the hardest decisions," according to the FDJ - Seuz rider.
Visma | Lease a Bike will continue to be there for the multiple cyclocross world champion, the team announced. "As a team, we fully support Fem in taking the time and space she needs. We will continue to support her in this process and wish her a speedy recovery."
During the winter, Fem van Empel faced a lot of not very picky criticism about her racing style. To the experts, she seemed to be racing without a spark, the joy that comes from cyclocross. Although she was the most decorated lady of the winter, she was undeniable far from the invincible ghost who left nothing but despair for her opponents.
The nature of these 'challenges' is not specified, but we can speculate that the pressure from fans, media and experts is a part of what the 22-year-old all-rounder wishes to escape during her 'pause'. There's only to hope she'll re-find the joy of cycling and come back soon.
