"I almost got the stage win" - Caleb Ewan buoyed by second placed finish on stage 4 at the Tour de France

After finishing third on stage 3, Caleb Ewan came even closer to tasting victory once again at the Tour de France on stage 4, being narrowly beaten by Jasper Philipsen in a final throw to the line.

“Once again I felt fast and I almost got the stage win”, said Caleb Ewan post-stage to the official website of his team, Lotto Dstny. “I know I’ve got the speed to win, but everything has to come together to do so. Although it’s a bitter second place, it’s nice to battle for the stage victory. I’m getting closer and I will keep on trying.”

The finish to the stage was a chaotic and hectic one with multiple crashes seeing various different riders hit the deck, including Ewan's teammate, Jacopo Guarnieri. “We knew it would be crucial to enter the circuit at the very front to stay out of trouble," Ewan says of the mess. "The guys just did it perfectly and made sure that I could start my sprint relatively fresh.”

“With the crash of Jasper and also Jacopo coming down today, we again needed to change plans," he continues. "If I’m surfing wheels in the sprint, I also need a bit of luck to win. Hopefully, we can take on the next opportunities at full strength.”
