Brandon McNulty has recently won the Tour de Pologne and he is truly on fire, maintaining his top form and taking the win today at the GP de Montreal, teaming up with Tadej Pogacar to beat the competition by a literal mile.
This wasn't the initial plan on the day, but one that was discussed mid-race as UAE was in the helm of the peloton with numbers but also the quality, and it looked evident that they had the ability to take the win in a number of different. "Four laps to go he asked me if I wanted to try and go solo and I said 'I can try'. Then we made this move on the climb, ended up in a group of four and he wins... But I was able to go across and he waited for me, and he was kind enough to give me the win," McNulty said of the World Champion in a post-race interview.
The Americanw was the one launching the initial attack, but having been joined by Quinn Simmons a victory wasn't certain. After the duo made the difference, they then had the ability to choose, and Pogacar was not short of any wins this year so the choice wasn't difficult. "We decided in the final to give to me so I'm really glad for that, it was a really fun day".
Besides well-earned, it was also a relaxed victory, in which the duo could take the final kilometers easy. "Yeah for sure. Even when you go one-two with a teammate, but when it's a World Champion obviously it's super special to go across the line... It's one of the most memorable days in my career so far".
UAE domination
Nils Politt and Tim Wellens did most of the work on the day, whilst Adam Yates and Jhonatan Narváez also got freedom to race for their own result. Pavel Sivakov, despite the large amount of kilometers in the head of the peloton, also had a strong result on the day.
"It's super cool to see your teammates and friends pull like this, we were in one line most of the day and I was just watching these guys pulling super hard and even behind I was suffering and didn't know if I was going to be able to go at the speed they were going," he admitted. "But when you see them pull like that it's a special motivation".
"I think its special, obviously we were close last year so it was a big goal of the team to have this record and now we're tied. I guess we need one more to break the record. I have to say I didn't even realize I was the one to tie this so that's a really statistic".
