The Philadelphia Cycling Classic brought high-level racing back into the United States on the 30th of August however with it also came news that almost became tragic. 19-year old Ezra Caudel suffered a crash and was put in an induced coma after serious injuries. It has been confirmed by the team that, despite having a long recovery road ahead, he has been released from the hospital recently.
"Ezra Caudell was officially discharged from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital late last week, 31 days after his traumatic accident at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic," the team confirmed in a press release issued this Tuesday.
"He will now begin an intensive phase of inpatient rehabilitation at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, followed by planned outpatient rehabilitation in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia".
On that day, the Modern Adventure Pro Cycling rider, a neo-pro, collided with a lamppost after having lost control of the bike and suffered a broken wheel due to a kerb or drain - as reported by Lotto-Intermarché's Milan Menten, who was riding with him at the time. The then 19-year old was unconscious after the collision and was placed in a coma after being transferred to the hospital.

Long recovery road ahead of Caudell

But good news have emerged over the weeks, with Caudell waking up, and since making improvements in his health status. 31 days after the crash, he was discharged from the hospital.
"While a long road still lies ahead, Ezra has already made tremendous strides—both literally and figuratively—toward recovery. Prior to discharge, he was walking the halls of the hospital, and his medical team expects both his lung contusions and his fractures to continue healing without the need for further intervention".
Caudell's neurological situation was just as important, but also one that is progressing: "Just as encouraging has been his neurologic recovery. Ezra continues to show significant improvement from the injury to his brain, with progress in his strength, cognition, communication, and independence each day".
"His recovery will take time, but his progress over the past month has been remarkable, and to see him now walking, interacting with those around him, and moving on to rehabilitation represents an enormous milestone. The drive, work ethic, resilience, and attitude that propelled him to the highest levels of his sport will undoubtedly serve him well on the road ahead".
Hailing from Acworth, Georgia, Caudell was in his first season as a professional rider. The formation of the American team provided an opportunity for riders such as him to compete internationally, which he has done by taking part in several World Tour races this year including the UAE Tour and Paris-Roubaix. He was also seventh at the elite national championships in the USA.
"Ezra’s family and the Modern Adventure Pro Cycling team have every confidence in him and remain deeply grateful for the continued support he has received".
