The Minerva Classic Brugge-De Panne had a very chaotic finish but it wasn't just in the sprint that damage in the peloton was created. Despite being there as preparation for the cobbled and Ardennes classics, Movistar Team's Gonzalo Serrano hit the ground during the race and is likely to be absent from his first goals of the season as a result.
During the Belgian race, where he was priming his form for the cobbled classics that lie ahead, he was riding in support of Max Kanter who finished in 13th spot. He hit the deck and suffered from a broken elbow, which has required surgery which he has in the meantime done.
Without Serrano Movistar will have a setback in the spring classics, however the team has evolved from being solely focused on Alejandro Valverde who is currently underperforming in the Volta a Catalunya. Enric Mas and Alex Aranburu will also be targeting the hilly classics, whilst Ivan Cortina will be focused in the cobbled classics, providing a safety net for the team.
