Gianni Moscon quits Itzulia Basque Country for Paris-Roubaix

The Astana Qazaqstan team has officially announced that Gianni Moscon quit Itzulia Basque Country, as he had to make his way to France to participate in the Paris-Roubaix competition on Sunday.

The Italian cyclist's plans for a podium finish were foiled by a puncture, but he still managed to complete the race with a respectable showing just shy of the top three in the 2021 edition.

Due to the effects of long COVID, he was unable to take part in the race last season. Moreover, he began the season on a difficult note as he suffered a collarbone fracture during the Tour Down Under. He just got lucky as UCI rules dictate that a rider cannot leave one race to start another if the events overlap, but Itzulia concluded on Saturday and Paris-Roubaix begins on Sunday.

The Astana Qazaqstan team has selected Moscon as their leader for Paris-Roubaix, and he will be joined by a team consisting of Cees Bol, Gleb Syritsa, Yevgeniy Fedorov, Dmitriy Gruzdev, Igor Chzhan, and Martin Laas. Mark Cavendish is not on the list.
