GC Update Tour de France 2024 stage 1 | Romain Bardet takes historic yellow jersey; David Gaudu and Lenny Martínez out of GC on day 1

The Tour de France 2024 started this Saturday, June 29, with an inaugural stage whose Grand Départ was held in Florence. With a very hilly day, with several categorized climbs throughout the day, a first battle was expected in the fight for the general classification, although there would also be a chance for victories from the breakaway. In the end, Romain Bardet took the yellow jersey with a thrilling victory, whilst a few GC riders suffered.
What nobody expected was that this first stage would be as epic as it ended up being. The whole stage was very exciting, but the best, as almost always, was saved for last. The Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL duo of Romain Bardet and Frank van den Broek crossed the finish line together after withstanding the peloton that seemed to be hunting them down in the final kilometers.
As a result, Bardet is the first yellow jersey of the Tour de France 2024, 4 seconds ahead of teammate Van den Broek (2nd), and 11 seconds ahead of Wout van Aert, third in the first gc update after winning the bunch sprint for third behind. Tadej Pogacar, meanwhile, is 4th, 15 seconds behind the yellow jersey.
Behind, in the end the positions have no real values, as the rest of the Top 10 overall maintains the same 15-second gap over Romain Bardet: Maxim van Gils is 5th, Alex Aranburu is 6th, Mads Pedersen is 7th, Remco Evenepoel 8th, Pello Bilbao 9th and Alberto Bettiol closes in 10th position after his first race with the Italian champion's jersey.

- That’s not entirely true. Every person follows their own development path and peaks differently. Remco and Primoz had hardly started cycling before elite level. Jonas was pretty much under the radzr until he unexpectedly had to take over responsibility at JV. Some guys only get real good in their thirties others have peaked mid-twenties.
