In and amongst the controversy of the stage 3 finale of the 2023
Tour de France,
Bahrain - Victorious's
Phil Bauhaus finished second behind
Jasper Philipsen. For a time it looked as if that may be improved upon by the race jury and
Fred Wright has revealed the perspective from the team bus.
"I mean we were joking about it. Like 'we think he should be relegated so that Phil Bauhaus would win the stage," the recently crowned British national road race champion laughs in an interview with ITV Sport prior to the start of stage 4. "I think it's just the nature of the barriers, that's what it looked like from what we saw. He was the fastest yesterday, let's hope Phil can be the fastest today."
Stage 3 didn't go entirely to plan for Wright himself either. Despite the relatively calm nature of the majority of the stage, Wright hit the deck and rides stage 4 with plenty of bandages on his arm.
"It's just for the show, it's not that bad, just to make me look a little bit harder than the reality," he jokes. "It was just a bit of a silly get down. Just after the top of the climb as we were getting into San Sebastian. I was the first man down which is always a little embarrassing. Luckily all good, didn't lose any sleep."
