Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel have an immense rivalry. The two generational talents collide at a point in time where both are at their prime, and are winning top races left and right. But in the mountains, Pogacar remains superior, but Evenepoel is going after his Tour de France reign.
“You have to make the decision if he wants to do classic races or not. For the moment, he wants to win the Tour de France," Museeuw argued in an interview with Domestique. Evenepoel recently talked about his calendar choices for next year, and the 1st of December route reveal by the Giro d'Italia organizers will be key for his decision. After a time trial-light course at the Tour, the Belgian is certain to aim for the Corsa Rosa if it provides him opportunities in his terrain.
And for Museeuw, the Giro is simply the natural course of evolution at this point in his compatriot's career. "Okay, he already won the Vuelta, and last year he was third at the Tour de France,” he argues. In 2023 Evenepoel raced the Giro, but was forced to abandon whilst leading the race after having contracted Covid-19. He hasn't returned since, racing for third at the 2024 Tour and aiming for similar this year, unsuccessfully.
Winning the Tour de France is his big goal. "He has the capacity to do it, but as I said before, as long as Pogačar is there, it will not be so easy". Evenepoel will nevertheless race the Tour in 2026, but it remains to be seen whether he will also race the Giro or not.
Evenepoel's palmarès, if Pogacar wasn't around, would've been generational and immense at this point. For example recently, he finished second at the World Championships, European Championships and Il Lombardia all in a row and all finishing solo behind the Slovenian.
However he still has his fair share of victories, which Museeuw points out, with the future Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe not being starved of victories in any way: "But he can win all the one-day races and of course, all the chrono races".
