Italian cycling standout
Filippo Ganna is competing in the
Volta ao Algarve 2024. As a member of the
INEOS Grenadiers team, he is building up kilometers in his legs ahead of the middle part of the season and will likely be heavily involved in the individual time trial, scheduled for Saturday, February 17 as the fourth and penultimate stage of the Portuguese competition.
In his competitive outings in 2024, the Piedmontese cyclist has maintained a rather relaxed attitude so far and seems to face the Volta ao Algarve without particular pressures, also due to a physical condition that, according to his own words, is yet to be fully polished.
"It's great to be racing in Europe again," Ganna told the Volta ao Algarve microphones before the start of the third stage of the Portuguese race. "And today is also good weather today, we'll see how the day goes. My fitness? During the break between the two seasons I was quite inactive and then, when I came back, I lost almost a month due to a small physical problem. Now we are starting to get back to competition and find the best physical condition." A year ago, precisely in the third stage of the Volta ao Algarve, Ganna starred in a very effective action, which then took him to the second place of the day, behind Magnus Cort Nielsen.
The Italian cyclist added: "I'm happy to be here with my teammates and to be able to prepare like this ahead of Tirreno-Adriatico 2024 (March 4-10, ed.). We'll see how things go. For the season, my main goal is definitely the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Spring Classics? We'll see..." Ganna concluded rather cryptically.
