Fernando Gaviria has returned to competition at the
Tour de Romandie after two months out of competition, and has smelled the win on stage two. With that said, the
UAE Team Emirates rider lacked the power in the final meters of the stage, but was nevertheless content with his third place on the day.
“I’m really happy with the stage, It was a hard day for me with lots of climbing . I’m feeling good, I did almost everything right and the team worked well but sometimes you win and sometimes you lose," he said in a post-race interview.
Gaviria started off his season well with two wins at the Tour of Oman, but was then infected with Covid-19 for a third time right before his first big goal of the season - the UAE Tour. As he returned to competition at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, he crashed and fractured a collarbone.
He's looking to gain some form in Romandie ahead of the Giro d'Italia, and today was likely his only sprint test before the Grand Partenza. "After two months without racing third place was good for me. My mind is focused on the race ahead and also on the Giro d’Italia," he concluded.
