Derek Gee and Adam Yates set to return to racing at the Giro d’Abruzzo after early season injuries

After disappearing from the racing calendar in 2007 after 34 editions of the race, the Giro d’Abruzzo is returning for 2024 with the race taking place this week. It is not just the race that is returning though, as both Derek Gee and Adam Yates will be on the start line for stage 1 today after being out of action through injury for over a month.

Gee suffered a broken collarbone and a mild concussion in a crash on the opening day of the Spring Classics at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad at the end of February, which forced him to miss the rest of his Classics campaign for Israel-Premier Tech, in a season where he would have looked to build upon his strong results from last year.

Yates is also returning after a severe concussion that he suffered in a head-first crash at high speeds in the UAE Tour, which forced him to abandon the race on stage 3 to Jebel Jais. He will go into the race as one of the main favourites despite not having raced since February, as he leads a UAE Team Emirates squad that includes the likes of Pavel Sivakov, Diego Ulissi and Jan Christen.
