On the third stage of the Tour of Luxembourg, an important day for the final classification, Davide Formolo finished 2nd, 18 seconds behind the day's winner Mauri Vansevenant. With this result, the Italian Movistar Team rider moved into the same position in the overall, 23" behind the Belgian Soudal Quick-Step rider.
However, the 31-year-old has now been sanctioned by the race directors, who have decided to expel him directly and thus, he will not be able to start stage 4. The reason? It was all due to an adjudged illegal position on the bike during a descent, where Formolo was caught leaning on the horizontal tube of his bike frame.
Mauri Vansevenant remains leader of the 2024 Tour de Luxembourg, however Mathieu van der Poel is now promoted to second in the general classification as a result of Formolo's disqualification.
