10 riders broke clear early to form the breakaway of the day, including the likes of Samuele Zoccarato (Team Polti VisitMalta), Valentin Retailleau (Team TotalEnergies), Simon Dalby (Uno-X Mobility) and the British rider Ben Granger (Mg.K Vis Costruzioni e Ambiente). For a large part of the day, their advantage over the peloton was more than four minutes, but by 50km to go, the gap had already been cut to just over a minute.
With the break still holding strong together though, they managed to reignite their pace at the front of the race and extend their advantage back out to over two minutes heading into the last 35km. As the attacks then started at the front of the bunch, the time gap was slashed again, with an elite group breaking free of the peloton and leading the chase, including the likes of Marc Hirschi, Jan Christen, Isaac del Toro and Richard Carapaz among others.
Thanks to this acceleration behind, just 2 riders remained out ahead into the last 15km - those being Alexandre Balmer and Edgar David Cadena, with the duo holding around 10 seconds on the chase and 35 on the main peloton. With 12km to go, they were swallowed up by the Hirschi group.
Not waiting for the final climb, Del Toro launched an attack with around 7km to go bringing Benjamin Thomas and the impressive Granger - who had survived from the early break - clear with him. As the final kicker to the line began inside the last kilometre, the trio were around 30 seconds clear of their chasers. In the fight for the line it was then Del Toro who took victory ahead of Thomas.
