"Continuing with the team was never in question": Lidl-Trek extend deal with experienced domestique through 2028

Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier will remain with Lidl-Trek through the 2028 season after agreeing to a two-year contract extension with the WorldTour team, extending his association with the organization into an eighth season.

The Eritrean rider joined the team in 2021 and has spent the following years largely in support roles. The 32-year-old is also one of Eritrea's most successful riders in the time trial. He won his country's national title for the fifth time in 2026, adding another national championship to a career that also includes the 2018 African road race title and the Eritrean road race championship.

“I am really happy to stay part of the Lidl-Trek family for another two years. The team has constantly showed their belief in me and they know they can count on me,” Ghebreigzabhier said in an official statement shared by the team.

“I have always felt good in this team and I know that my hard work is appreciated a lot by everyone, which is satisfying to know. I feel comfortable in this group and I am proud of the work I do for the team so continuing with Lidl-Trek was never in question. I look forward to the years ahead.”

Ghebreigzabhier arrived at the WorldTour level with Dimension Data in 2017 after developing through the Eritrean and South African cycling scenes. He had already shown strong stage-race potential before making the jump, winning the Tour International de Constantine and Tour International de Blida in 2014 and finishing second at the 2017 Coppa della Pace and Giro del Medio Brenta. He also finished ninth overall at the 2017 Arctic Race of Norway.

His first full seasons at the highest level included fourth overall at the 2018 Tour de Langkawi and sixth at the 2019 Vuelta a Burgos. The Eritrean also finished 12th overall at the 2018 Tour of Slovenia and took seventh on a stage of the 2018 Vuelta a España.

Alongside his results with professional teams, Ghebreigzabhier has remained a leading figure in Eritrean cycling. He won the African road race championship in 2018 and has claimed the Eritrean road race title, while his national time trial record now stands at five victories, with titles in 2019 and from 2023 through 2026.

He joined Trek-Segafredo for the 2021 season and became part of the structure that was later renamed Lidl-Trek. His best individual result with the team came in 2023, when he finished second at the GP Industria & Artigianato. He has since become an experienced Grand Tour rider, with six Giro d'Italia appearances and four participations in the Vuelta a España.

Andy Schleck, Lidl-Trek's CEO, highlighted Ghebreigzabhier's role within the team's racing program when confirming the extension. “Amanuel is an outstanding teammate and has played an important role in many of the Team’s victories. He is a powerful diesel engine when he is on the front of the peloton, and we know that we can trust him to do his job 100 percent,” Schleck said.

“I am happy that he has decided to make Lidl-Trek his home for the next two years. Amanuel is consistently riding at a high level, and we look forward to continuing to work with him.”
