The Spaniard finished third at the Vuelta a Espana as a 19-year old and is following similar footsteps to those of Tadej Pogacar. Although he has said to he will be eyeing the Vuelta a Espana once again next year, on his debut Pogacar took the win at the
Tour de France, and the
Jumbo-Visma rider is aware that such surprises are quite possible with young riders such as Ayuso and Remco Evenepoel coming up the ranks.
He commented aswell on his Tour de France, and what he considered to be his best day of the season. “My best day this year was on the Col du Granon. Looking back now, that was my best day on a bike ever," he answered, in reference to the 11th stage where he dropped Tadej Pogacar to ride into the yellow jersey which he would never again leave.
