Cian Uijtdebroeks made his debut for Team Visma | Lease a Bike this past week at
Gran Camiño where he teamed up with
Jonas Vingegaard. This was not by coincidence, the Belgian rider is looking to learn as much as possible from the Tour de France champion.
“I mainly pay attention to routines. How he prepares for a time trial, for stages, and what emphasis he places on training," Uijtdebroeks told Wielerflits. "I think he is the best teacher, the best Grand Tour rider at the moment. I can learn a lot from that for my own development.” This week was then a test for the two to race together and for Uijtdebroeks to also see the Dane in action as part of the same block.
The 20-year old is one of Visma's main projects in development at the moment. Both wanted to collaborate very badly and at the end of last year Uijtdebroeks broke his contract with BORA - hansgrohe so as to join the Dutch team. Now in full swing, he has spent some time with Vingegaard already with the objective of learning how to become a stage-racer f the same caliber.
“He remains so calm. He is so good as a leader, he radiates a lot of calm. He is direct and knows what he needs," Uijtdebroeks said of the rider who won three stages and the overall classification in Galicia. "That is a good lesson for all of us." Uijtdebroeks himself had a free role and was not forced to work throughout the week, taking a fifth place in the GC over the four days of racing that included plenty wind.
