The streak of bad luck is seemingly never ending for
Cian Uijtdebroeks. After multiple injuries and illnesses that prevent the
Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider from returning to his best level, upon another attempt at a comeback he has now been hit by a car and is having to delay his return to the sport once again.
Back pain has been an issue for the Belgian almost since he joined the Dutch team, and has on multiple times set him back for undefined periods of time. Ever since he abandoned last year's Giro d'Italia where he was battling for a top position, he has never been able to find the necessary consistency to fight for results at the high level.
Having finished fifth during this winter's Tour of Oman, there were hopes that these problems were now behind him, but at Tirreno-Adriatico they returned on the queen stage as he struggled with back pain once again. Ever since he's raced a few times but made the decision to take another break.
With the end of the season still looming large it is still possible to compensate for it, however the 22-year old's intended comeback this weekend will not be as he reported being hit by a car this Wednesday which has sent him to the hospital - luckily without fractures to report.
He wrote: "Today a car came out of its parking space, crossed the road and hit me hard during a training session. Watch out for vulnerable road users! Otherwise you are playing with lives!”
