Eritrean talent Biniam Girmay has had a super start to the season and will be trying to take that form into the Giro d'Italia. He has talked about how his current situation in the peloton is currently.
“I am very happy to be back here. I love Belgium and the enthusiastic fans. The World Championships in this country are something I will never forget," Girmay told Wielerflits. He was a contender at the recent Minerva Classic Brugge-De Panne, however the dangerous and technical finale of the race saw him out of position for the sprint, where he eventually finished in 21st place.
After gathering promising results over the last few seasons, Girmay has taken the leap to World Tour level late last season with Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux after his former team DELKO disbanded halfway through the season with financial issues. He soon gave the team back the results, winning the Classic Grand Besançon, finishing second in the U23 World championships and featuring in the Top10 in several late-season classics.
This year started no different, as he won the Trofeo Alcúdia in his second day of racing, and has since put on a series of strong results, featuring several Top10's including three sprints in Paris-Nice, Milano-Torino an a 12th place in the highly attacke Milano-Sanremo. He will race his final day of the spring today at the E3 Saxo Bank Classic: “E3 seems to me to be an ideal course to get a taste of Flemish racing. It's just a bit nervous racing and maybe it's harder than the Ronde, but it's also not the race where he will experience the great pressure. Besides, we also have to take into account his home situation. Now he can go home a week early to prepare for the Giro," said team DS Steven de Neef.
Afterwards, Girmay will go home and rest, before focusing on the preparation for the upcoming Giro d'Italia: "I miss my wife and child of a year and a half, so it doesn't seem bad to me to prepare the Giro d'Italia there at altitude. Otherwise the period at home would have been very short. I have to make choices, and I will still have enough opportunities in De Ronde. The Giro is now the biggest goal.”
