France is unlikely to have Julian Alaphilippe in his best form at the World Championships, and their chances of a win narrow as Benoît Cosnefroy, fresh off an impressive win at the GP de Québec, has confirmed he will not be a part of it.
The 26-year old has not only won the Canadian race, but finished runner-up at Amstel Gold Race and the Brabantse Pijl which feature explosive routes. Being one of the best puncheurs in the world and coming to good form, he was expected to be a key part of France world's team taking into consideration the puncheur-friendly route, but the AG2R Citroën Team has different plans in mind.
Talking to reporters after his win in Canada, Cosnefroy revealed that he will not be racing the World Championships, not by team demand however like several other riders, but by personal option as he does not want to include long travels and jet lag at this time of year, and will instead focus on the European calendar where he will have several more opportunities to take a win. This Sunday at the GP de Montréal he will also be one of the main favourites.
Besides Alaphilippe, France is set to count on Valentin Madouas and Christophe Laporte towards their hopes of a strong result. The whole lineup is yet to be confirmed.
