2024 Tour de France stage 4 GC Update | Tadej Pogacar wins 50 seconds on Jonas Vingegaard; Remco Evenepoel climbs to second place; Richard Carapaz cracks in yellow jersey

Stage 4 of the Tour de France 2024 promised to be the first real test of the favorites for the general classification. It was the first day of high mountains with the mythical Col du Galibier as the protagonist and it certainly delivered. Richard Carapaz started the day in the yellow jersey, with the same time as Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard; but the UAE Team Emirates rider stamped his authority in the race.

What could you expect from a day like today and with all the stars of cycling climbing the Col du Galibier? Well, the spectacle that they have given, which has been huge. Pogacar regained the lead after a brutal attack less than 1 km from the top that left Vingegaard behind, and on which he increased the advantage in a descent that he took on brilliantly.

Thus, the UAE Team Emirates star leads with 45 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel who managed to finish the stage also in 2nd position. 3rd is Vingegaard who is now 50 seconds behind Pogacar, a considerable gap for only the 4th stage of the Tour and the first high mountain stage.

Behind, Juan Ayuso is 4th, 1 minute and 10 seconds behind his leader in the UAE, after finishing a stage. Primoz Roglic moves up to 5th place, but 1 minute and 14 seconds behind, too much of a gap if he wants to compete in the Tour de France against a Tadej Pogacar who looks just as strong as in the Giro d'Italia. Carlos Rodriguez, after a brutal performance, is 6th, 1 minute and 16 seconds behind the yellow jersey. Mikel Landa is in 7th, a very strong performance from the Basque climber, now 1 minute and 32 seconds behind the leader.

João Almeida, Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal complete the Top10, virtually tied with Matteo Jorgenson, Felix Gall and Adam Yates. Enric Mas, Aleksandr Vlasov and Simon Yates shed more time whilst Richard Carapaz lost over 5 minutes whilst wearing the yellow jersey.
