His reason doesn't make sense. He can just take a break after Giro before a build up to Vuelta. There are a number of months before Vuelta begins and there should be enough time to have a few weeks of rest. If the priority is to be a GT rider, this is another good opportunity to expose himself. Unless, of course, he doesn't like the idea of fighting for GC, then it all makes sense that he wants to avoid riding another GT in a year.

I think Ayuso is suffering from those crashes and the team just want to have him to recover in time before the mountain stage. They are playing safe. Whether there's any internal conflict, we won't know. At least, they don't show any enmity in public. Let's see if we can see a hierarchy after the next mountain stage.

He's a good climber, but you're right, he's 21 and could crack. Carapaz and Simon Yates will be right there. Carapaz is the dark horse. I beleive Del Toro will rise to the occasion. UAE will get on board after Tuesday if he is strong. We'll see.

Seems Mr VdP is only in competition with his head...

GC Pidcock far behind the main contenders. Classics Pidcock is too tired due to GC Pidcock. Hence no wins and no top 5. First he needs to win a one week WT race with climbs before thinking of competing with the favs.

I thought his recent absence from 1 week tours were due to the concussion delaying his build up. I don't see how that is considered avoidance. He's going head to head with Tadej in Dauphine soon.

Nothing surprising except that it’s so different from the pre-race discourse.
