- Older/recently retired riders like Geraint Thomas and Peter Sagan say that pro racing no longer has any room for fun. The training is year-round and the racing is relentlessly intense from KM 0. Good for Wout and the other pros to have an event like this that is serious enough to be interesting, but still mostly for fun. Seems like a great weekend for lots of people, and in this case an exciting finale with a real life alien on course.
- At least 2 problems:
They have to be fully reliable to deflate after the impact and be fully reusable
They're definitely hotter so wearing them in the summer would give someone a heatstroke
- My point is that the guys in 1st or 2nd row almost never crash
- An incredible ride by Stiasny and a fabulous GC ein by Blasi. What a brutal brutal column that was, and everyone in the top 10 on the climb and the GC raced an incredible race.
- 1,000+. It's not like someone throwing a beer from within a crowd -- the idiots are leaving a trail of smoke to their location, making it easy to catch them.
- The race commissioners should be fined for allowing smoke bombs to be lit by idiot fans looking for attention, as riders go by
- I made the official statement... I'm a cycling official.
- Congrats to Wout... he deserves the wins after all the bad luck he had to go through. He's also a nice guy.
- Brilliant win by Wally!
I'm sure everyone is thinking the same question about Niels Vandeputte. His engine is HUGE (no explanation needed - he doesn't have the nickname Tailgunner Charlie in CX for no reason), and his sprint is FAST (he outsprinted Tim Merlier to take the Belgian National Gravel title). He didn't give Vermeersch and the others a chance in the sprint.
So how is it that he is not a key workhorse for Alpecin-Premier Tech's Road team? He has everything needed, and would get the title of Breakaway Harrier.
What's most likely is that he isn't motivated enough, which is a shame.
He was mentored by Adrie van der Poel when he was younger (and still now), and grew up with David and Mathieu as almost older brothers. He's said that Adrie often treats him like a 3rd son. Hence he'd be the most loyal of domestíques.
But as he's shown in these gravel races against Vermeersch, he could be a leader himself
- We love a WvA win 🥹
