The Azencross Loenhout is one of the very few races in the Christmas block that isn't part of a cup, however it had a star-studded field in the men's event with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel having their first battle. The latter won, whilst the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider was victim of a fall on the final lap that got him out of the podium.
Whilst the World Champion stormed to his fourth win in as many races, Laurens Sweeck chased on in second place throughout most of the race. Thibau Nys and Wout van Aert worked together to reel him in close to the finish, and on the final lap the trio would fight for the two remaining spots on the podium.
Van Aert would be left out as he collided with the arm of a spectator in the final lap, falling and losing meaningful time. In a video taken by a spectator, which you can watch below, you can see in a closer angle the fall of the Belgian rider:
