Willunga Hill pulls the seams out of a sad Movistar Team at the Tour Down Under

Movistar Team has not started the 2024 WorldTour season with too much fortune. The team landed at the Tour Down Under with an exciting team led by Rúben Guerreiro, Gonzalo Serrano and Iván García Cortina, but things are not going as expected;

Today, on the mythical climb to Willunga Hill, the best of the team was a Guerreiro who is not in form and lost 32 seconds to the winner of the stage Oscar Onley.

In the three flat stages Cortina was the best in two of them finishing 13th in both and the best position was obtained by Oscar Serrano finishing sixth. On the day Isaac del Toro won, with a clear finish for puncheurs, Cortina finished far back and it was Guerreiro who 'saved' Movistar's honor by finishing seventh.

Of course no Movistar is anywhere near the top 10 in the overall classification of the first WorldTour race of the year. We'll see how Movistar tackles the rest of the early season calendar. Last year they performed at a high level in races like the Tour of Oman, the Vuelta a San Juan or the Saudi Tour. So far, bad start in the Tour Down Under, although there is still a long weekend with the Clàssic CV 1969, the last stage of the Australian race and the GP of Castellón.
