GC riders once again kept their powder dry in the Giro d'Italia on Sunday. On the last short climb, the Colle Aperto, some shy attempts were seen, but otherwise there was no real attack among the favorites. To the satisfaction of Jumbo-Visma and Primoz Roglic.
In the final, Jumbo-Visma briefly took control on the way to Bergamo. “Groupama-FDJ maintained strong control and it came down to the last climb,” said sports director Marc Reef. “It has turned out that the classification riders are evenly matched. Moreover, it was too short to make a big difference. We made it through today's stage well.”
It became clear in the second Giro week that all eyes are on the very tough final week. Jumbo-Visma has not done much head work so far. “We didn't have to waste a lot of energy,” adds Reef. “However, it was quite a challenge to stay healthy in the bad weather conditions. Fortunately, we can look forward to the final week with eight riders.”
“In stage 8 we took some initiative and Primoz immediately showed that he was in good shape. We are pleased with the situation and now we have to wait for the right time to attack,” the Jumbo-Visma team leader announced. He is now third in the standings, 1.10 minutes behind pink jersey Bruno Armirail and two seconds behind major competitor Geraint Thomas.
