"We are in the age of records. I encourage him to come back" - Vuelta a Espana race director begins attempt to lure back Primoz Roglic

Primoz Roglic took his fourth overall victory in the Vuelta a Espana in 2024. With this latest triumph in Spain, the Slovenian has tied the record for the cyclist with the most Red Jersey wins in the history of the race alongside Roberto Heras.

Speaking to AS colleagues, Vuelta a Espana race director, Javier Guillén has already begun to launch a message to Roglic in order to try and convince him to return to Spain in 2025 in search of what would be a record breaking fifth victory in the Spanish grand tour, instead of going for the Tour de France.

"Just as there are riders who have won the Tour five times, why shouldn't we have one who wins the Vuelta a España five times," begins Guillén's public plea to the Slovenian. "We are in the age of records. I encourage him to come back. On Sunday I congratulated him and told him: 'Red is the colour that suits you best'".

"He is the most decorated rider, the most important rider in terms of his track record and the living history of the race. Never again will it be possible to talk about La Vuelta without talking about Roglic. It is a right that he has earned and a gift that he gives us," said the director of the Vuelta a Espana about the figure of Roglic.

With Tadej Pogacar rumoured to again go for a Giro d'Italia - Tour de France double in 2025, and Jonas Vingegaard also keen to take a similar route, Roglic may be motivated to first go for the Tour de France, which barring injury is a certainty that the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader will be present, and then satisfy Guillén's interests with the title defence at the Vuelta a Espana 2025.
