A run-of-the-mill Grand Tour sprint stage this was not! Stage 3 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia had plenty of drama mid-stage as an elite group of sprinters formed a breakaway but in the finale, it was the fastmen's turn to be put on the back foot.
With a small climb coming within the final 3km of the day, INEOS Grenadiers were setting a fierce pace to keep their leader, Geraint Thomas safe, with Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar right on the Welshman's wheel. When Mikkel Honore tried his luck with an attack, Pogacar and Thomas followed causing utter chaos to the sprint trains behind.
As Pogacar and Thomas - one and two on the GC - began to roll through, Honore was soon left rueing his decision to attack as he was dropped by the Tour de France winning duo. Coming into the final kilometre, Thomas and Pogacar maintained a narrow margin over the peloton and for a moment the stage win looked up for grabs. In the end though, as the sprinters launched the dup would be caught, with Tim Merlier taking the win from the bunch.
