Today's stage of
Paris-Nice to La Loge des Gardes promised a first battle in months between
Tadej Pogacar and
Jonas Vingegaard and it delivered. In the 6.7-kilometer climb both have attacked each other in spectacular fashion.
Initially, Vingegaard launched the first move with 4.3 kilometers, early into the ascent as domestiques began to disappear from the GC group. Only Pogacar followed the initial acceleration, but without collaboration the duo was then reabsorbed by the remaining GC contenders.
However after a short restbite, with 2.5 kilometers to go the race kicked off once again as Pogacar attacked this time around. Vingegaard was not able to follow the move, and after trying to bridge across the gap he cracked and lost 43 seconds on the road alone.
Pogacar in the meanwhile managed to bridge across to David Gaudu who had attacked earlier, and rode on to a strong stage win which has earned him the yellow jersey for the time being.
