It it as shocking as it is revolting. During the finale of stage 6, two Italian men in a protest against Israel - Premier Tech's presence at the
Giro d'Italia decided to try and block the peloton and cause riders to crash. A spectator-recorded video shows the incident in a level of detail that was not possible to see in the TV broadcast, and it is even more dramatic than it initially looked like.
The TV broadcast showed live the the 67-year old man next to the peloton and holding something, but initially it didn't look like too serious of an event. After the race however, it was revealed in the footage of the breakaway camera that the duo actually attempted to crash Taco van der Hoorn and Enzo Paleni who led the race at the time.
Van der Hoorn was gobsmacked at what happened: "Suddenly, there was someone in front of me. With a ribbon and who knows what else he had," he had said in a
post-race interview. "I came to a complete standstill. I rode straight through them, but I came to a complete standstill, because they completely blocked the road".
Later it was revealed that the men were acting in protest of Israel - Premier Tech's presence at the Giro, and that the perpetrator of this act had been arrested shortly after these moments and will be charged with personal injury and resisting a public official.
A spectator recorded what happened from the side of the road right where this happened and the footage not only shows everything that had been possible to see until this moment, but also the moment in which he advances towards riders that were in the back of the peloton - who somehow, again almost miraculously, avoid him - and then attempts to escape the scene immediately.
