Jumbo-Visma knalt alles kapot op de slothelling, Van Aert gaat solo #TDF2022
Jumbo-Visma have brutalized the opening day of Paris-Nice earlier this year with a three-man attack in a similar finale, and at the fourth stage of the Tour de France the same strategy had it's benefits as Wout van Aert launched himself into a memorable stage win in Calais.
Summiting with 11.5 kilometers to go, the Côte du Cap Blanc-Nez had only 900 meters at 7% average gradient, however it was enough to see the first splits between the Tour de France contenders as Jumbo-Visma and INEOS Grenadiers riders swarmed the front at the base. Nathan van Hooydonck and Tiesj Benoot detonated the group, and Wout van Aert launched a move over the top with Adam Yates and Jonas Vingegaard uncapable of following.
The yellow jersey took the stage win as he then kept his gap over towards the finish by the sea, whilst the GC riders finished safely in the peloton which later regrouped. The explosive attack from the Dutch team and the difficulties from the likes of Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic were a novelty sight, from a type of racing that has seen many struggle with.
Tomorrow's stage into Arenberg will provide further gaps in the fight for the overall classification, as tension will reach an all-time high during the first week.
