With the breakaway caught and the peloton being the front of the race as the intermediate sprint neared, the time bonuses on offer meant the GC riders came out to play.
Primoz Roglic was trying his best to put some pressure on the overall race leader Remco Evenepoel who as yet has looked peerless in his quest for the Maglia Rosa. Led out by his teammate Koen Bouwman, Roglic opted to use the intermediate sprint as the perfect opportunity to gain a few seconds back on the Belgian in pink.
Sadly for Jumbo-Visma's plans, Evenepoel decided he wasn't going to let the Slovenian take even a second out of the advantage he has built up. The Soudal - Quick-Step man came over the shoulder of Roglic to take the maximum of three bonus seconds and actually increase his overall lead.
